Arthur J. Magida | University of California Press
Jewish bar and bat mitzvahs, Muslim shahadas, Zen jukai ceremonies, Hindu sacred thread ceremonies, Christian confirmations––one aspect religious and spiritual cultures around the world share in common are rites of passage. In Opening the Doors of Wonder, author Arthur J. Magida explores coming of age ceremonies celebrated in religions, tracing their origins and evolutions, and interpreting how their meanings shift and change both through time and through each individual's experience. Intellectuals, authors and artists such as Chinua Achebe, Robert Thurman, Deepak Chopra, Ram Dass, Coleman Barks, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), Julia Sweeney, and others share thoughts and revelations about their personal rites of passages with Magida. The collection is an intimate look at how religion can shape and influence an individual to make lasting impressions. Although many of those interviewed went on to integrate themselves into different religions, or perhaps none, it is clear that rites of passage hold a special place in the memory, one that may confuse or enlighten, but certainly one providing yet another chapter in our narrative of life. The Zihuatanejo Guitar Festival
When Jonathon Wise and Catherine Krantz were searching for a way to bring more visitors to Zihuatanejo, a small town on the Mexican Pacific, in the off-season, a music festival seemed like a great option. One of the most special forces of music is its ability to bring communities together. Starting in 2003 with no budget, Wise and Krantz were amazed at the outpouring of support from local and international businesses and musicians, who provided donations and sponsorships for accommodations, meals, airfare, et cetera. The Guitar Festival was a huge success and continues to be a key event in the local community. This year's festival, taking place March 11-18th, will continue this legacy of music and unity. Guitar artists from around the world, including many from California, will come together to help raise money for the Case de la Cultura, an educational center offering free art and cultural classes to the community. Come to this year's party for days of song, sunny paradise, and new experiences and connections. Go to www.zihuafest.info to sign up or learn how you can volunteer.
