Deva Premal and Miten
October 28th at Seaside in Encinitas

by James Anthony Ellis

That voice. It’s a silky smooth sound that comes from some other place. Is it from the ethers? Or from a haven of the musica universalis? It is all at once soothing and illuminating. In common terms, it originates from Deva Premal, a
German-born vibrato who performs her spiritual chants at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007. In esoteric terms — of which she is most likely akin — this voice originates from some place deeper and higher.
As highlighted on her CD Deva Premal Sings The Moola Mantra (released in August from White Swan Records), Deva’s other-worldly voice sifts continuously through the mantra, leading listeners on a peaceful journey through the doors of the ethereal. Joined by Miten, her musical and life partner whom she met 17 years ago at the Osho ashram in India, Deva’s latest musical adventure starts with an invocation and ends with an incantation. In between, listeners are treated to a serene soundscape of sitar, bansuri, dotar, strings, piano, tabla and ambient electronica all dancing gracefully around Deva’s dreamlike vocals. Throughout, Deva’s Moola can be upbeat in one moment and then turn completely serene. But it’s always sublime, calming, hypnotizing … ultimately turning full-circle in a journey towards inner peace. Shanti, shanti, shanti…
Deva says that the main intention of the sacred songs, the mantra and the concert is to bring listeners into a deeper state of consciousness, eventually taking them into the stillness within themselves.
“Singing has a strong healing power,” she says. “Deep breathing charges our cells with the vibration of the sound. With Sanskrit words, mantra singing becomes a powerful spiritual tool, an effortless way to enter meditation.”
It was a visit to Sri Amma and Sri Bhagavan’s Oneness University in India last year that inspired Deva and Miten to record the Moola Mantra — a mantra cherished by the community in their practice of “deeksha,” a transmission of spiritual energy. In the end, the Moola Mantra’s theme is one of universal oneness and harmony between the male and female aspects. Deval Premal Sings The Moola Mantra leads you ultimately and sublimely inward — into the silence of your own soul. Enjoy.

Deva Premal and Miten will perform 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007 at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas. Doors open at 6:30 pm. General admission is $25 advance and $30 at the door. Tickets are available at Soulscape Books. For more information, call 760.753.2345 or

Human Design

Have you noticed how life seems to be speeding up? The solutions we had for challenges in the past are not quite cutting it these days. All of us want our “lives” back—but are stretched to find ways to allow that to happen. Many of us have tried self-help programs or engaged with esoteric systems that can give us significant answers but leave us without a complete picture of how to integrate them into our lives nor the means to keep up with the changes that may confront us. In 1987, the Human Design System, a wholly new esoteric system, was channeled into the world in its entirety. It is quietly evolving to be the means for each individual to have clear access to their personal makeup on a continuing basis. The system has been described as “the first Aquarian system” since it relates exactly to the science and needs of this time. Human Design is differentiated from previous esoteric systems in that it not only gives access to one’s personality features (as do most esoteric systems), but it also clearly indicates one’s whole unconscious, genetic inheritance. This inheritance is very much a part of our nature but is generally hidden from us. What becomes increasingly obvious through Human Design is that we are co-creators of our lives. If we do not know who we are, what we want or what is good for us, then we cannot have a conscious part in drawing those features into our lives. With Human Design, we get clear recognition of all aspects of our makeup and therefore can find ourselves completely involved with our co-creation and our evolving life. Finding ourselves involved in this way leads us from self-knowledge to self-acceptance to self-love. It is a dramatic and insightful journey. Finally, each one of us has the means to be in love with our life. A Human Design reading from an experienced practitioner is an essential tool for one’s life in these rapidly changing times. Learning the system for yourself in a skillfully guided class will serve you throughout your days. A world traveler, Chetan Parkyn has been reading and teaching the Human Design System since 1993. Previously, he spent a decade deeply immersed in meditation and self discovery, living in India with the Spiritual Master Osho and developing his psychic and intuitive abilities through the study and practice of Palmistry, Tarot, Face Reading, and the I Ching. He has lectured and written extensively on Human Design. Together with his wife and partner, Carola Eastwood, also a Human Design Practioner, he will be leading a Three-Day Human Design Training in San Diego, November 10-12.
