Earth Cinema Circle
by Sydney L. Murray
Watching the new releases from the Earth Cinema Circle I am reminded of what green living truly is about. It is about the inhabitants of this planet who don’t have a voice. I changed the way I lived when I took a class as an undergraduate entitled Man, Nature and Energy. I understood the Energy Footprint of all of my choices and more than anything, that is why I didn’t want to eat meat. It completely changed the way I looked at the world by making me accountable for my energy choices. I knew what each of my activities approximated in BTUs (British Thermal Units), which measure of the true energy cost of my actions. The whale song in the documentary The Life Among Whales in this month’s Earth Cinema realase by Dr. Roger Payne is poignant in my ears as I hear an ancient calling to respect all life.
I am not sure of the actual meaning of these haunting melodies emitted across thousands of miles but what these sounds mean to me is melodic and memorable. In this documentary, Payne asks, “What more could one species do for another than save its life?” He is referring to studies made about dolphins saving human lives on multiple occasions. The second selection of the month entitled The True Cost of Food is an animated short created by the Sierra Club which highlights the real or actual cost of the food we buy. Similar to my course in college it reiterates the energy path of all the food we buy including packaging and transportation. And if you buy green you can actually lower the cost of food you buy and learn how to lower the energy footprint you leave on the planet. The Earth Cinema Circle is hosted by Ed Begley, Jr. a notable environmental activist who recently said, “I’ve personally been trying to protect the environment and the natural world since the 1970s—that’s when I bought my first electric car, that’s when I started recycling and composting, that’s when I got involved with a lot of environmental groups and sought to further the environmental message.”Begley is continuing the tradition by introducing films and documentaries that explore wildlife and conservation, green movies about environmental choices, inspirational biographies about environmental heroes and adventurous ecotravel.

Global Sound Conference
We all have musical influences on our lives, but none of us realize just how much. At the 2nd Global Sound Conference in Los Angeles, the world’s top researchers, technologists and musicians will be brought together to take an in depth look at the many ways in which sound can and does affect our lives medicinally, emotionally, and spiritually. The four day symposium will be held at the Marina Del Rey Marriot in Los Angeles from May 9 -12, and the conference speakers vary from different disciplines covering a wide range of sound influences. This year, the focus will be an examination of aural trends in the areas of music therapy, motion picture sound design, rehabilitative audiology, acoustics, musical performance techniques and more. Since there’s such a large range of disciplines, the speakers’ ranges are just as broad. Just some of the speakers are jazz legend Stanley Jordan, psychoacoustic expert Joshua Leeds, Hollywood sound designer Alan Howarth, and the Mozart Effect author Don Campbell. At night, the sounds of the night will be spiced up with concerts from Sheila Chandra, Yungchen Lhamo, Rickie Byars Beckwith with the Agape International Choir and many others. Alex Theory, Ph.D., who is the founder and director of the Global Sound Conference, says, “Sound impacts us on such a primal, unconscious level that we often overlook or take for granted the role it plays in our health and mindset on a daily basis. We’re looking forward to a lively mix of cutting edge research and traditional wisdom in our discussions of how we can use sound as a tool to create practical and effective solutions to many common issues.” For more info, check out www.globalsoundconference.com.
